“In collaboration with the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies(DCDT) and its State-Owned Enterprises, in 2023/24 and 2024/25 the province will roll out 7253 community Wi-Fi hotspots, and more than one million households will have access to broadband connectivity across the KwaZulu-Natal”, said Dube-Ncube during her presentation.







TV WHITE SPACE CONNECTIVITY GAINS GROUND IN SOUTH AFRICA
Some KwaZulu-Natal(KZN) communities have become the latest to gain affordable and reliable broadband access by means of television white space(TVWS) technology. The traditional area of KwaXolo and township of Gamalakhe, which are located in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in the KZN province, have deployed Internet services using TVWS technology.



CHEAP INTERNET FOR KZN RURAL COMMUNITIES AND SMMEs
The project was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the Government Of Japan and implemented by the council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with the aim of providing low-cost internet connections to the neediest communities around the country.


LOW-COST INTERNET CONNECTION FOR SOUTH COAST’S RAY NKONYENI RESIDENTS
TVWS technology uses the gaps, known as “ white spaces”, between terrestrial television broadcasts to deliver affordable broadband networks. AdNotes is the company that championed the use of the network as a viable alternative for the people of KwaXolo to provide the cheapest Internet connection at R5 unlimited data per day.



SME’S URGED TO GO SOLAR TO MINIMIZE POWER PRICING AND SUPPLY THREATS
The electricity sector has been in the spotlight recently with the impact of a 15.62% increase in electricity tariffs and frequent power interruptions. Large companies in most cases have already responded by converting to solar energy, but SMEs that are still pondering the viability of investing in solar, should act sooner rather than later, he added.


OLD MUTUAL FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH ADNOTES
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Old Mutual Foundation, the UNDP and the Office of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Premier launched the AdNotes Rural Television White Space Network in KwaXolo, Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in Ugu District, KZN.

In line with its ambition to be the digital hub of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is focused on bringing broadband connectivity closer to communities.
This is according to Sibusiso Ngubane, deputy director-general in the office of the premier in KZN, noting this is being done through the Smart Connected Province project launched by premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

Thousands of community members in and around Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in the Ugu District of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), will now have access to low-cost internet connection like their counterparts in the cities following a successful launch of the Television White Space (TVWS) technology in the area.
